The International Baccalaureate aims to develop inquiring, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through intercultural understanding and respect.
Students are required to study 6 IB subjects 3 of which are at Higher level and 3 at Standard Level. Subjects are graded out of 7 with the minimum being 1 giving the potential to score 42 marks.
An additional 3 marks can be obtained collectively through TOK (Theory of Knowledge) essay and EE (Extended Essay).
Theory of knowledge
Theory of knowledge (TOK) is assessed through an oral presentation and a 1,600 word essay. It asks students to reflect on the nature of knowledge and on how we know what we claim to know.
The Extended Essay (EE) is an independent, self-directed piece of research, finishing with a 4,000-word paper. A component of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme, the EE is mandatory.
How I can help
I have been teaching IB subjects for 8 years in Singapore and there is a huge transition for students from IGCSE in terms of expectation, pressure, workload and complexity of content.
Different to IGCSE, IB has a significant proportion of internally and externally assessed in year assignments. This varies between subjects but ranges from 20% to 50% of the final grade.
On going support is most valuable as students have the opportunity to contribute towards their final grade.
Students require a more mature mind set to work efficiently within extremely challenging boundaries and deadlines.
I work with them either 1:1 or in small groups to help them succeed by
- Advising on subject choice
- Teaching content
- Reinforcing teaching through timed question and mock exam practice
- Guiding them through graded assessments
- Having a biochemistry degree, I am familiar with writing research papers and can contribute well to planning both Extended Essay and ToK essays
- As a biochemistry graduate, chartered accountant and a writer I am an expert in all subjects that I teach
