They Know the Content. So Why Can’t They Get the Grade?

I sit across from parents most weeks who tell me some version of the same thing: “My child knows the material. They just can’t get it down on paper.”

They’re right. Today’s students know more than any generation before them. AI can summarise a novel in ten seconds and generate an essay plan on command. So why are so many still walking out of exams with grades that don’t reflect what they actually know?

Because knowing isn’t the same as answering.

Knowing Isn’t the Same as Answering

In English, and in most written subjects, content is a smaller part of your mark than people assume. The larger share is interpretation, structure and delivery: understanding what the question is really asking, organising your thinking before you write, choosing the right tone for the task, and building an argument someone else can follow.

That’s not a content problem. It’s a thinking problem, and it’s the one thing no search engine can do for you.

This is what BOUNCE was built to solve.

What BOUNCE Is

BOUNCE is a six-step process I’ve refined over 18 years of watching students freeze in front of a blank page. The name spells an acronym, but the steps don’t happen in that letter order, and they don’t need to. What matters is that every step happens, every time, until it becomes instinct:

Understand the Question
Convert it into what it’s really asking. A “how” question is almost always a “what” question in disguise.

Brainstorm
Everything out first, no order, no filter. Students already carry more knowledge than they realise.

Organise
Group ideas into three to five thematic strands, so a page of notes becomes a coherent argument.

Nuance
The right register and tone for the subject and the audience.

Consolidate
Check that every claim has evidence and the argument holds together.

Exam Ready
Write fast, because the thinking is already done.

For most students, understanding the question comes first, in practice, not brainstorming. The acronym is memorable. The sequence is theirs to find, with guidance.

Why This

Content stopped being the scarce resource a long time ago. Our tutors, many of them practising IB and IGCSE examiners, don’t just teach content. They teach students how to use it.

That distinction is the whole of what BOUNCE is.

Why It Isn’t One Size Fits All

Every student’s journey is different, and increasingly complex. A student who struggles with confidence needs something different from a student who overwrites and runs out of time.

BOUNCE gives us a shared framework, but how we apply it is built entirely around the student in front of us, and it evolves every year as the syllabus does.

What I Want for Every Student

Not a student who needs more tuition. A student who can learn, think, apply and deliver on their own, long after they’ve left us.
