The IB Results are here and months of preparation, feedback, and hard work may or may not have paid off. Some students who have come to us as young teens have now left with big, bold wings, scoring As and 7s with flying colors! While some are disappointed and disheartened by an IB low grade or score. Most students have put aside many aspects of their regular lives and focused on completing the IBDP course. That’s two solid years of hard work. It can be underwhelming if the results may have not turned out completely in your favour.
How to cope with a low IB grade?
IB Exam Failure, or IB results that are lower than expected, hit students the most when they weren’t expecting such results at all. Perhaps you feel that you’ve written your papers well. You may have already planned ahead with your university admissions and other scenarios in life.
You must know that failure, however embarrassing and disappointing it may seem, is just another step towards your destination. Never let failure in anything – be it your exams or any goals that you want to achieve – define you. You decide who you are, and what you are, so don’t let numbers, opinions, and people decide that for you.
But, is that all? What should you do now? There are many options for you to consider, which we’ll touch upon in this blog post.
1. Retake the exams
If you’ve failed an IB subject, then you can always retake the exams again. According to their website, “Candidates can retake a subject in any future examination session and at any IB World School offering the Diploma Programme or Career-related Programme”.
However, there are certain restrictions that could hinder this. The best approach is to contact the IB program coordinator at the school where you’d like to register and retake the exams. The school isn’t under any obligation to accept retake candidates, so you must try your best. Remember one thing though, retaking your exams means waiting for the next session (November for the May candidates) and that would have you behind by a few months for graduation. Not necessarily a bad thing but do think this through. Your parents or guardians would also be able to guide you.
If you wish for a retake until July 29th would be the most cost-effective period to apply for a November 2023 retake. October 15th is the deadline for registration which means you have some time to dwell on this decision and get your study plan together. This being the official dates by the IBO, your school’s deadline could be much sooner. Do check that too.
This option is a hit or a miss with many students, simply because remarking papers can go both ways – it can lower your grade or increase it. Hence many students are hesitant toward applying for a remark. But, if you’re confident about your performance and believe that your low grade could be due to some technical error or for any other reason, then you can certainly take the chance and go ahead and get your papers remarked.
Currently, the window for having your papers remarked is 6th July-31st August. There are a few categories to re-initiate remarking, hence it is best to contact your IB coordinator for the same. Results come out within a couple of weeks, making it a relatively faster process. If your IB score was a near miss, and remarking your exams have upped your grade, you have another chance at meeting the criteria for your conditional offer.
3. Wait till the 17th of August
If your score was a near miss, or a few points lower than the score needed for your university seat, then you can wait till the 17th of August. This is when the A-level results will be announced. In case you have a conditional offer or an offer by the university given to you on condition that you score a certain grade, and you’ve only missed the grade by a few points, it can be so discouraging for all the hard work that you’ve put in.
If the A-level results are slightly unfavorable and there are still spots left by the university to fill, there are some chances that you’d be accepted based on your conditional offering. In that case, you must wait for the clearing. This article will help you understand the process in detail. 4. Take the unconventional route
If these options mentioned above don’t feel like the right way forward for you, and you want to approach the next step the unconventional way, then there are pathway programs, apprenticeships, and trade schools that you can opt for. There’s always a way out if you look for one, and if you keep trying, then you will cross the bridge that leads you to where you belong. So, don’t let low IB Results bring you down too much. Stand up taller and push through these tough times. As we get older and become adults we eventually learn that exams aren’t the worst parts of life, and that school was relatively easier compared to the competition and brutality of the real world.

For many of you, exams ended last month and you’ve unleashed yourself from academia for now. Going on a long holiday with family or friends is most needed at this stage. Consider a holiday with loved ones or a productive summer program. While some choose AS/A levels post-IGCSE, many opt for IB to access international universities/Ivies. Transitioning to IB is a process that requires some preparation and awareness.
But first, what is this blog post about? It’s perhaps a little reality check to ruin the holidays before they begin completely. No, we wouldn’t want to do that! We’re just trying to help ease things out so that when college begins you’re ready with the ammo and prepared to go…
Coming back to the topic, here are some student-approved ways in which you can prep for IB in advance:
Choose your IB subjects well
Which subjects are you looking at? What are your career goals? Are you set with them, or would you like to test the waters? Choose your subjects wisely, making sure that they align with your long-term career goals. If you haven’t yet decided on what career you want to pursue, don’t worry! You’re still young and have a long journey ahead. But, you should choose subjects based on your interests and then weigh out your options before college admission begins. Meanwhile, don’t do your IB simply for college credit! Focus on the subjects where you know you’d fare well, and prioritize your strengths, not just credits. Passion trumps fashion.
Emphasize research projects like EE
Other than the six IB DP subjects, you also have to prepare for the DP Core which includes EE, ToK, and CAS. Research-based components like the EE and ToK are crucial to adding extra points to your overall IB score, and the Extended Essay has a minimum word count of 4,000 words. But, you must not be intimated by the huge number! The monstrosity can be overwhelming and you might want to take a break from it. But once you begin it, you must not leave it halfway. Having to rework it after a break of a few weeks or months wastes a lot of latent time, also distracting you from working on other subjects.
Look at the bright side – working on 4000 + words would make anything and everything feel like a piece of cake.
Make IB interesting for yourself
While aiming for a Math major, it might seem challenging to invest time in subjects like analyzing advertisements or working on a History IA, which may not directly align with a math-focused career. However, each subject significantly contributes to your overall IB score. To strike a balance, integrate your personal interests into all subjects. For example, if you’re passionate about revenue management, explore mathematical aspects in areas like airline overbooking, which can be incorporated into both Math and Economics IAs. If History intrigues you more than Science, consider exploring the historical aspects of science in your IA. By aligning your interests with your coursework, you can effectively leverage your skills while ensuring a well-rounded and impressive IB score. This approach allows you to tap into your full potential, making your IB journey both fulfilling and academically rewarding.
Different students have different interests, varying bandwidths, and different experiences – no two experiences are the same. This is a simple fact and needs to be understood in the simplest manner. Hence, when you hear past IB students expressing their unpleasant experiences with the IB, they all but sound like horror stories for the fresh and relatively innocent batch of IB grade 11s. But don’t listen and believe everything you hear. A student found IB Physics impossible because they weren’t good at math, but another student kept their mind open and realized there wasn’t much math to begin with. In short, trust your intuition and act upon your own instincts. Don’t rely on other people’s opinions and approaches and create your own unique path.
Prioritize college applications over IB coursework
Your IB grades are integral to your college admissions, true. However, if you only focus on scoring well, you might lose track of the tasks you’ve planned out that are necessary for the same procedure. You need to prioritize your college applications before you begin your IB work. Once school begins it’s super easy to get dragged down by your IAs, your English homework with your private instructor, and every other task set by your school on a day-to-day basis. Time flies really fast before you realize you’re due to submit the personal statement and essay. A few years down the line, what matters is which college you went to and not what you scored in your IB GPA. So, understand what the end goal is and set your own deadlines.
Run the IB and don’t let it run you!
In your two-year IB journey, maintain control and don’t let it overshadow other essential college admission tasks. As an IB student, you already possess strong academic credentials for reputable colleges. Remember that colleges aim to assess your ability to handle a challenging curriculum while leading a balanced life.
If you have a summer internship or a job, don’t prematurely abandon it due to concerns about overwhelming IB demands. Such experiences offer a chance to develop skills and enhance your admission profile, creating a win-win situation. Don’t miss out on opportunities; always assess their long-term significance. Striking this balance ensures you maximize your potential and present a well-rounded college application, making the most of both your IB education and extracurricular pursuits.
Embrace your enemies
While the IB program may not be everyone’s favorite, it’s a crucial step in your educational journey, and the only choice is to embrace it. Find a reason to appreciate the IB, tapping into your interests and immersing yourself in the curriculum. View it as a valuable learning experience with benefits you may not immediately see.
Achieving those coveted 6s and 7s requires hard work, and harboring hatred for the program won’t make it any easier; in fact, it may hinder your performance. This principle extends beyond the IB; you won’t always adore every task, but you can’t solely do what you love. Just as everyone enjoys a doctor’s fee but not the act of dissecting a human body, most tasks come with aspects we may not relish. Embracing this reality, even within the IB, can lead to a more productive and ultimately rewarding journey.
Think of this program as an IB pinata and just go ham at it!
And the most important thing: you must be proud of the work you’re doing and how hard you’re working. It’s not easy to feel that pride because you’re always go-go-go the next thing now, the next deadline! There’s always something to complete and something to study for. But you need to take a break every now and then: treat yourself, go out with your friends, reward yourself after every achievement, and build great memories.

In the Writing and Language section, there are four passages to analyze, comprising a total of 44 questions, and test-takers have 35 minutes to complete this section.
The math section test length is 80 minutes.
The digital sat math test length is 70 minutes.
The “No Calculator” section of the math test consists of 15 multiple-choice questions and five student-produced response questions. Calculators are not allowed for this particular section.
Throughout the math section, the use of a calculator is permitted. The math test comprises a total of 33 multiple-choice questions and 11 student-produced response questions, with both types of questions, intermixed.
The Calculator section of the math test comprises 30 multiple-choice questions and 8 student-produced response questions.

Now that your exams have ended, you’re in search of a summer job. While working at a McDonald’s outlet may have free food and insurance perks, seeking an internship is beneficial for your long-term goals. For those appearing for their finals the next year, this is essential as it not only makes your university application seem appealing but also adds valuable work experience after graduation. One may wonder why internships for students are important. Well, think of it as a crash course that you get to learn without paying anything. An internship in your desired choice of career helps you acquire both hard and soft skills. At the same time it teaches you how to interact with professionals in the working world.
While it does sound easy, it requires a bit of research to find the right internship for you. Looking for an internship is like shooting an arrow without an aim – you need to first plan and think about how to get one. Then think about how relevant it is to you, and how it would help you grow and develop your skills for your career.
#1 Settle down on a specific career goal or interest
This is the first step to take while looking for an internship. What type of internship do you want to take? Do you have your career goals set in place? What are your skills, values, hobbies, and interests? What are you good at?

Alternatively, if they don’t have any internship programs up on their website, you can directly email them with a suitable cover letter and resume. Express the reasons why you’d want to intern with them, making sure to highlight your enthusiasm behind the same.

If they have anything in mind or have internship positions at their own company, they can inform you about it and help you apply right in time. Understanding the question
To write a good summary, the first and foremost thing is to understand what is given in the question. Now, IGCSE summary questions can be of the following types, let us go through them to understand them better.

QUESTIONS’ REQUIREMENTS
The Passage – A particular passage will be given in the question and you will need to thoroughly follow it and answer what is asked in the question. Pay attention to the whys and what’s in a question as they are very important. Your answer should not be a general description of the passage but instead, it should focus on specific ideas or details contained in the passage.
No Bullet Points – Your summary should be written in continuous form or let us say in paragraphs. Do not write in bullet points or in note form.
The Word Limit – It is fundamental that you consider the word limit given on the exam paper. Not too much or too less. Writing too little will mean that you have not included enough information from the passage. Whereas writing too much will mean that you have included irrelevant information.
Using one’s own Words – As you can see from the above, this point is highlighted in the 0500 question paper as it is key. Using your own words does not mean that you can write anything from anywhere. Pinpointing the important points from the given passage and then writing them in your own words is what is being asked here.
The Marks – Paying attention to the marks is crucial as you need to make sure that you have included at least 15 relevant points from the passage in your summary as that will help you gain marks for your content.

TIPS AND TRICKS
1. Planning and highlighting the important points
Knowing how to start, where to start, and which points to include is very important. Hence, planning plays a significant role in writing a summary. Highlighting the important points in the question paper also plays an important role as there are time constraints and you cannot note down the important points first and then make them into paragraphs. Instead, underlining or highlighting the points in the question paper will make your job much easier. In this way, you will not leave out any important and relevant points from the given passage.
2. Use only relevant points from the text
You do not need to include all the points from the given passage. Only the relevant points or the main ideas from the text are what your answer needs. The points should be comprehensive and cohesive.
3. Avoid repetition
You must always refrain from using the same point/idea again and again. There may be times when a point is made twice in the given passage but should always remember that while extracting it from the text you should use it only once. Repeating the same thing will only cost you time and words.
4. The proper format and style
In summary, writing, using proper Essay Vocabulary is very important. Along with that, your summary should be concise, formal, and impersonal. Avoid using the first person and do not write any slang. To write concisely, try using compound sentences which will help you to include two or three points together without making your summary lengthy.

What is the Extended Response to Reading Essays for IGCSE?
This question involves 15 marks for reading and 10 marks for writing. Predominantly it is a reading question, it has three bullet points that need to be covered equally. The student is expected to write 250-300 words, responding to one of the different types of texts that include-

Reading
Firstly, you need to clearly state the things that are happening. This shows that you understand the appropriate events in the text. Next, you should understand the implicit meaning and attitude, something that is not probably mentioned in the text, and you need to figure out, like the tone or emotions and what might happen next or predict the next move. Finally, you need to analyze, evaluate, and develop. This is the important part, you are expected to understand the text you read, its implicit and explicit meaning and to add your ideas which are sensible with appropriate support from the text.
Writing
The above objectives expect you to think about what are the character’s thoughts in the text. For instance, imagine how the character might be feeling at that time. Second, organizing and paraphrasing in a way that brings out the emotional response from your reader. Third, adding interesting vocabulary that the character might use, using different types of sentences, and not repeating the same sentence type again and again. Fourth, adjust the tone of your writing according to the context. And last, having accuracy in spelling punctuation, and grammar.
No matter what the text type is, here is a general structure that can be used. Five simple paragraphs, a short introduction, and conclusion, and equally sized body paragraphs (3 bullet points).
